Can my flood insurance cover personal belongings

Flooding is the most pervasive and expensive natural disaster in America. It affects homes, business buildings, and other properties in Canby, OR and other parts of the country. Despite floods affecting your home structure and personal belongings, homeowner’s insurance does not cover any damage related to floods. At Oliver Insurance, we recommend buying separate flood insurance to cover personal belongings. So, does flood insurance protect your belongings?

Yes. Flood insurance is a separate policy that protects your home and its content from damage from water damage.

What does flood insurance cover?

If you suspect or found out that you live in a flood zone area, your first step should involve seeking coverage to protect your home and loved ones from flood damage. According to NFIP, flood insurance covers the following:

  • Water heaters and furnaces
  • Plumbing and electrical systems
  • Permanently installed carpet
  • Window blinds
  • Cooking stoves, refrigerators, and other inbuilt appliances like the dishwasher
  • Permanently installed bookcases, paneling, and cabinets
  • Detached garage
  • Well water tanks, fuel tanks, and solar energy equipment
  • Anchorage systems, foundation walls, and staircases

What is not covered by flood insurance

Like you may have already guessed, flood insurance does not cover everything in your home. It is also essential to keep in mind that the cause of flooding heavily determines whether your belongings are covered or not. Flood insurance covers losses directly caused by flooding. For instance, if you left your tap water open and allowed water to flood your home, flood insurance may not cover the damage. The falling water has to come from the sky and nowhere else. If the flooding in your home were as a result of an overflowing creek, flood insurance would only come in to help if the overflow was a direct result of flooding.

Boat Safety Tips on the Water

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a retiree, or a fisherman by trade, you want to be as safe as possible when you take your craft out. Here are a few safety tips for Canby, OR residents to consider.

Personal Flotation Devices

It’s always a good idea to wear your life jacket. Be sure your jacket is clean and the straps are secure before setting out on your day of fun. Even strong swimmers need the protection offered by a PFD. Be sure to provide these for any young people or children who may be on your boat. Whether you sail or row, motorboat, or paddleboat– you’re always going to be glad you put your life jacket on before leaving the dock.

Check your Equipment

Get familiar with your equipment and be sure to check that everything is in working order prior to taking your craft out. If your vessel uses an engine, be sure you are gassed up and ready to go. Make sure the structure of your boat is sound and that there are no leaks or weak points.

Acquire boat insurance prior to getting in the water by contacting your agent at Oliver Insurance. They’ll discuss what coverage you need to protect yourself and your vessel.

Pay Attention

Be aware of your surroundings, and consider the behavior of other boaters in your area. Always know where beaches are to avoid swimmers and consider the impact of weather on the success of your day on the water. Storms can develop without much notice, so be careful when determining what to do in case of poor conditions.

Use Common Sense

Feeling the wind on your face and enjoying a day on the water is one of the best sensations in outdoor recreation. Keeping alert and using common sense will keep you and your crew safe. But if the unexpected does happen, be sure you’re covered by Oliver Insurance. Reach out to your Canby, OR agent today to discuss premiums, deductibles, and policy needs. It’s common sense to get protection– just in case you need it!

Is umbrella insurance something everyone should have

When many people hear the word umbrella insurance they are confused about what it is and if it is something that they should have in their insurance portfolio. Understanding exactly what umbrella insurance is and what it does is important to understanding if it is something that everyone should have. At Oliver Insurance in Canby, OR, the staff has many years of experience in umbrella insurance and are happy to share that knowledge with their customers.

One insurance carrier uses a large umbrella in its logo. Imagine the protection that a large umbrella offers against inclement weather. This is the type of coverage that umbrella insurance offers to you and your assets. Umbrella insurance is excess liability insurance. It is not a policy that you can purchase alone, it can only be purchased if you already have a policy with liability coverage. Policies like home, auto or commercial insurance and benefit from the addition of an umbrella insurance policy.

In the event that you are the defendant in legal action, you will have some protection from the liability portion of your primary policy. Most basic policies have rather basic liability limits as well. Given the size of many of the judgments that are reached these days, it may be that the liability limit on your policy is woefully inadequate and could leave you with a sizeable amount of money that you need to pay out of pocket. That is where umbrella insurance coverage comes in and covers the amount over and above the liability of the original policy up to your umbrella policy limit. Most umbrella policies are between one and five million dollars.

To find out if umbrella insurance is right for you, give the office of Oliver Insurance in Canby, OR a call for an appointment or stop by to talk to the experienced staff. New and current customers are welcome.

Commercial Insurance You Need for Your Online Business

Even if you are operating your business online in Canby, OR, you still need commercial insurance to protect it. Digital businesses, just like all businesses, are vulnerable to some type of risk. An agent at Oliver Insurance can help you find the right insurance for your business.

General Liability Insurance: You need a general liability insurance policy to be protected from a lawsuit for something you post on your website or social media account. It can also help protect your business from advertising or personal injury claims and covers legal fees and other costs. There are other types of liability insurance in Canby, OR that you may want to consider depending on what your online business offers. Errors and omissions insurance will help protect you against lawsuits if you make a mistake while offering your client your services.

Business Owners Policy: If you are running your online business then you will also need some more protection than what you get from your homeowners’ insurance. If you have supplies or your inventory in your home then you may want to consider a business owner’s policy that combines general liability insurance with property insurance to cover the cost of replacing items.

Data Breach Insurance: Your online business can be hacked, your website can be down, or your customer data has the potential to be stolen. Data breach insurance can help you cover the costs it takes to recover from a data breach. It pays for things such as legal fees, public relations, and identity protection solutions to help restore the public’s trust in your online business.

Workers Compensation Insurance: If you have hired employees for your online business, you want to have worker’s compensation coverage. Accidents can happen at any business and this way, you can be prepared if an employee gets injured on the job.

Acing Your Life Insurance Physical

Before you can be covered by a term life insurance policy, you’re going to have to undergo a physical. Now, you want your physician to catch you on a good day, right? You don’t want to take your physical in the middle of fighting off the flu, or on a day when you’re really stressed, so here are some tips for putting your best foot forward at the physical:

  • Avoid nicotine and caffeine leading up to your physical. The concern here is that these will bump your blood pressure up a few BPM’s, and your physician will wind up thinking that you have high blood pressure when the truth is you just had a Monster energy drink this morning. So stay clean and stick to water on the day of the physical.
  • Work out after your physical. Skip the morning trip to the Canby, OR gym, and do your workout later. Again, this is going to affect your blood pressure. Take a walk to get your system going, but keep the running or weight lifting for later.
  • Let your physician know if you’re afraid of needles. Don’t try to play it tough. If you have an actual fear of needles, that’s going to affect your test results, so it’s better if they know upfront.
  • Be honest. You can’t trick a physical exam. Get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, and avoid any substances and you should do fine.

If you’re shopping for life insurance in Canby, OR, call Oliver Insurance and see what they can do for you. If you’ve been meaning to quit smoking or lose weight, life insurance discounts can be the perfect motivator.

4 Reasons to Buy Home Insurance in Canby, OR

When you buy a home, it is probably the biggest purchase you’ve made to date. It is important to protect this purchase with home owner’s insurance. Whether it is necessary from your lender or even if you do not have a mortgage, you should still have home insurance. Below are four reasons that homeowners in the Canby, OR area should purchase home insurance.

Protect Your Assets

Having homeowner’s insurance will give you peace of mind that your home and everything in it is protected. While you never hope for anything bad to happen to your house or its belongings, it is smart to make sure that if that does happen, you are not left without anything.

Preserve Your Property

Shield Yourself from Other’s Damages

Having home insurance will even help protect you from the responsibility of accidents that others may have while on your property, too. For example, if a person injuries themselves while in your home or on your property, you would not be responsible for their injury with home insurance coverage.

Save Other Structures on Your Property

Lastly, home insurance will even cover other structures that are on your property. This means if you have a detached garage, shed, pool house, or other structure on your property, it’ll be covered.
