Everyone is looking to save money these days, and auto insurance is one of the most common expenses people shop around for in order to reduce costs. There are some great ways to save money on your auto insurance, and the good news is you may not even need to switch insurance companies to save money-nor should you have to give up any of your coverage. Here are some of the easiest and most common methods of saving money on your auto insurance.

What Are Your Deductibles?

The deductible is the amount that you would have to pay out of pocket in the event of certain types of claims. Most people opt for low deductibles so that they won’t be responsible for coming up with much cash. This isn’t always the smartest way to go, however. Higher deductibles can save you a lot of money in the long run, even if you do wind up having a claim in which you have to pay that amount.

If you are a good driver, the odds of having an at-fault accident are relatively low. If increasing your deductible saves you hundreds of dollars a year, you won’t have to go many years without an accident before you have already saved more than enough to cover that increase in the deductible.

Are You Getting All The Available Discounts?

One of the things many people don’t consider when shopping around for car insurance is shopping for homeowner’s insurance at the same time. Why should you do this? Most companies offer a hefty discount on both policies when they insure your home and auto together. Check if your current auto insurance company offers homeowner’s as well, and you might not even have to bother shopping around. In addition to the savings, you will also have the convenience of everything being in one place.

There are other discounts you may be missing out on as well! Be sure to check regularly with your agent or insurance company to find out if all the discounts you qualify for are being applied to your policy.

Are Your Cars Rated Correctly?

Auto insurance rates are calculated based on a number of factors, including the number of miles you drive each day. If you are a stay at home parent but your car is being rated as a commuter vehicle, you could be paying too much. If you have changed jobs and now commute only five miles each day rather than 30 miles, your yearly average will drop, which could have an effect on your rates. Be sure to advise your agent when changes in your driving habits occur! You could be reaping the benefits.

What is Sports Liability Insurance?

Everyday, amateur athletes of all ages participate in practices, clinics, games, and tournaments. As fans, we hope it will never happen, but accidents and injuries do occur on the field. As a result, lawsuits are sometimes filed against the league and its participants.

Why do I need sports liability insurance?

If an accident or injury occurs during the operations of your sports organization, and the injured person files a claim against your organization, you’ll need to cover the resulting costs.

Few sports organizations can cover these costs without help.

Sports liability insurance protects your league or organization—including you, your employees, and your volunteers—from the cost of liability claims.

We offer a wide range of liability programs for sports teams, leagues, and associations. For more information, visit our sports liability insurance page.

How am I covered with sports liability insurance?

A comprehensive sports insurance program will protect your organization against bodily injury and property damage claims that arise as a result of operations, premises, products, completed operations, advertising, or participant injuries.

The three main areas of sports insurance coverage include:

1. Accident Insurance—accident medical coverage reimburses medical expenses for an athletic participant resulting from an accidental injury while participating in covered activities. Coverage is triggered after the exhaustion of all other medical coverage for which a participant may be eligible. Typical limits of accident medical coverage range from $25,000 to $100,000 per injury.
2. General Liability Insurance—a commercial general liability policy provides coverage for civil claims, including legal defense costs. Coverage includes: allegations of bodily injury, personal injury, and property damage. Without accidental insurance, a general liability policy will not provide legal liability to athletes.
3. Directors & Officers Liability—this area covers lawsuits that claim that the sports league’s mismanagement has resulted in economic injury to another person or that another person’s rights have been violated. Examples include: discrimination, wrongful termination, or failure to follow your own rules or bylaws. Coverage includes the sports organization, directors, officers, and volunteers.

Other benefits of sports liability insurance include:

• Zero deductible for liability claims
• Umbrella policies
• Coverage for equipment
• Hired Auto and Employers’ Non-ownership Liability coverage
• Additional options to meet your organization’s insurance needs

Sports liability insurance coverage is a necessary component of any sports organization.
You don’t need to be a millionaire to be sued like one. Accidents happen all the time, and today we live in an extremely litigious society. Every day lawsuits are filed and settlements are awarded. You may think it will never happen to you, or maybe you feel your liability limits are adequate coverage. What happens if your coverage is not enough? An umbrella policy providing excess liability coverage may be the single most important policy you ever buy!

What is Umbrella Insurance?

An umbrella insurance policy is a separate policy that will protect your assets and income from being lost in a lawsuit verdict or judgment against you or a resident family member. This policy acts as an “umbrella” over all of your personal liability policies- auto, home, boat, RV, etc. Since this is excess liability coverage, umbrella insurance goes into effect when the underlying policy limit has been exhausted.
This policy will also “fill in the gaps” by providing liability coverage that may otherwise be excluded from a policy. An umbrella insurance policy can provide the following coverage:

• Worldwide coverage for you and your family
• Off-premises liability protection
• Coverage for legal cost for covered claims
• Coverage for activities that may cause personal injury such as libel, slander or wrongful eviction.

Business owners should also consider an umbrella policy to protect their business from potential lawsuits.

How much umbrella insurance coverage do I need?

Typically coverage limits range from $1 million to $10 million. In order to determine an adequate coverage limit think about how much you have to loose. You will want to determine the value of the following:

• Your house
• Any vacation or rental home(s) you own
• Any bank or investment accounts in your name
• Your current income and any potential future income. If you are married you will want to consider your household income.
• Your future retirement income or pension if you qualify.

Who needs an umbrella insurance policy?

We here at Oliver Insurance, feel strongly about the need for this coverage. Umbrella insurance is not only for our wealthiest clients with many assets. We recommend coverage to clients that claim “they are not worth much” or “do not have anything worth suing for.” What these people are forgetting is their earning potential or inheritance. If you loose a lawsuit and do not have enough assets to cover the settlement, your future income including inheritance can be garnished. Please ask yourself these questions to see if you may need an umbrella policy.

• Do you own a home, condo or rental property?
• Do you own a boat or ATV?
• Is there a teenage driver in your household?
• Do you have a babysitter or house cleaner in your home?
• Do you have a swimming pool or hot tub?
• Do you own a dog?
• Are you active in sports such as golf, skiing or hunting?

The more you answer “Yes” the more likely you should have an umbrella insurance policy. For more information on umbrella insurance or a personalized quote, contact us today, 503-266-2715 or email help@oliverinsurance.net! At Oliver Insurance we specialize in taking care of your insurance needs.

2010 brought some exciting changes at Oliver Insurance. One of those changes was the beginning of our quarterly newsletter. We always have pertinent and helpful information, and our Oliver Insurance newsletter is a convenient way to share that with you. We hope that you will find our quarterly newsletter informative and enjoyable. Please feel free to share it with others who you think may benefit!

We also started a new annual client review process. At Oliver Insurance, we realize that changes happen in our client’s lives everyday that may affect their specific insurance coverage needs. These annual reviews will give us the opportunity to check in with you, discuss any changes and adjust your coverage appropriately. We are very excited about this, as sometimes events that seem insignificant to you may have money-saving affects on your premiums! When our office calls to schedule your annual review, we hope that you will make the time for this quick, yet possibly money saving, opportunity.

NEW Referral Program

Here at Oliver, we have also started a really fun new referral program to show our appreciation to all of our loyal clients who are constantly referring their friends and family to us.
